THE RUM DIARY (Bruce Robinson, 2011)
I had fun! It's a good old fashioned adventure movie where you laugh and hoot and have a great old time and then forget all about it. It certainly doesn't add up to much of anything in the end, but the characters were fun, the foxy bird was foxy, it looked nice and grainy and the the whole thing trucked along at a nice pace. Later Lou told me that it was the guy who directed "Withnail & I" and Johnny Depp begged him to come out of retirement, which made a lot of sense. It's that same kind of drunken ramble that's basically just a bunch of random amusing events. Much like life! If you're lucky...

Ray Mooney's "Everynight, Everynight"
There's a new production of my old writing school teacher (and total legend) Ray Mooney's great play about his time in H-Block during the 70's, where he shared a cell with a young Christopher Dale "Renta-A-Kill" Flannery (you might remember Gary Sweet playing him in "Blue Murder").
It's brutal stuff but really good and I suggest you get along! I'm gonna go, and i hate going to the fucking theatre, so that says something...
Here's Ray's spiel about it...
Forthcoming
Production of my play, Everynight Everynight.
Frank Theatre Company has put together a sensational cast
and production team under the tutelage of director Stuart Grant for their
production of Everynight Everynight at Gasworks Theatre
(http://www.gasworks.org.au/) Tues 8 – Sunday 27 May (Tues – Sat 8pm, Sun 5pm).
Tickets $35/27.
The cast are: John Brumpton, Steve Bastoni, Damian Hill,
Paul Ireland, Adrian Mulraney, Tony Richards, Stuart Grant and Kaitlyn
Clare.
Two years ago my good friend Darren Hassan directed this
play to full houses in The Old Adelaide Jail as part of the Adelaide Festival.
That production was designed to accommodate the jail and was the culmination of
years of planning by Darren.
Now Dame Hill has revised the original script, brought
together the perfect cast and director, financed it himself and created a
terrific word-of-mouth buzz.
If you’re interested in some advance publicity then open the
following:

“Do you know much about why this play was written?”
Theatre director Stuart Grant is very passionate...

FRESH "KORE" HYDRANT PIECE c.1989
Finally got my hands on a copy of the great photo-book "KINGS WAY - The Beginnings Of Australian Graffiti: Melbourne 1983-93".
Of course the whole thing's bursting with eye popping freshness, but this dope "KORE" with the classic 'disobaying my mother' tag line really pumped my gonads this morning...
Check out the book here...

On The Radio, In The World... 10/5/12
ON THE RADIO
The guys from BAD ACHES gonna come in and a do a guest DJ spot at about 5:30, and in the second hour I think it essential we have at LEAST a few more Prince records. And some other stuff too...
And don't forget our PBS RADIO FESTIVAL big yearly fundraiser starts next week. Get some bones or clams or whatever you like to do business with together and pledge 'em toward keeping the old girl going for another year...
IN THE WORLD
Saturday i'll be back at The Gem for SATURDAY NIGHT FISH FRY. Bruce had to drop out of this month, but in his place we have the fabulous two headed DJ monster Tony & Sue Shaw of The Exotics. These two have years and years worth of obscure greasy vinyl squirreled away in their bungalow that rarely gets a public airing, so don't miss out! Dripping good creole cuisine, Guinness on tap, twangy guitars and broiling saxaphones in my ear, nice comfortable bar stools, sounds o'right to me...

To get off this list, reply saying: Wildlife experts speculated that a dolphin trapped in the Bolsa Chica Wetlands in Orange County, California, may have been the victim of bullying. “People think they are happy loving animals,” said a marine-animal rescue specialist, “but they have a dark side.”

PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE (Brian De Palma, 1974)

Had the pleasure of re-watching this masterful spectacular during the week, and it only gets better with age! It's a 70's rock melodrama horror comedy musical in the rocky horror vein (though Phantom pre-dates it) that mixes bits of The Phantom Of The Opera, Faust and The Portrait of Dorian Gray with classic evil music biz svengali type lore, Troma-esque celluloid psychosis, campy doo-wop revivalism, suprisingly good 70's piano balladry and a fabulous character named BEEF to marvellously entertaining affect.
It was largely a flop at the time (although it was massively and enduringly popular in Winnipeg, Canada) but has since gone on to become a cult classic among those of us with the particular mental condition of loving this sort of shit.
99 out of 10!
And once you've watched the film go deeeeeeeeep down into the Phantom hole at THE SWAN ARCHIVES!
