ANDREW WARTTS & THE GOSPEL STORYTELLERS - THERE IS A GOD SOMEWHERE

I am utterly transfixed by this deep floating gospel soul jazz opus. One of those records you just wanna play all day long over and over again while looking out the window at the rain. Recorded in 1980, but like a lot of later gospel records, it remains timeless...

If you got a lazy  $656 you can buy a copy here...

http://www.discogs.com/Andrew-Wartts-and-Gospel-Storytellers-There-Is-A-God-Somewhere/release/3510566

I saw one in a record store in Japan and went "ooooooooooooh...", but it was about the same price

Now Again have the rights to it, so hopefully they'll get around to a proper LP re-issue someday. Or if someone out there has a label and would like to license it from them and put it out, I would most appreciate that...

In the meantime you can get it on mp3 from here:

ERIC HOBSBAWM, 1917-2012

I've got a big old soft spot for equally lauded and lambasted pinko historian Eric Hobsbawm. I certainly ain't co-signing evrything he ever said, but his writing about history (and jazz) was lively and witty and heartfelt and eminently readable.

If you wanna check his shiz, Uncommon People, Resistance, Rebellion & Jazz is a good collection of essays, and Age of Extremes : The Short Twentieth Century 1914-1991 is a great analysis of the rather disturbing last hundred years or so...

ARBITRAGE (Nicholas Jarecki, 2012)

Cuts open package. Dips finger. Tastes. "This is quality stuff..."

Like last weeks movie, this ain't exactly a gold dubloon of pure cinematic art you'll remember forever or anything, more like a really good episode of Law & Order or something (if Law & Order didn't totally suck all the time).

Richard Gere plays a hedge fund manager who appears to be Mr Success No Worries On Top Of The World but is in fact desperately trying to squirm his way out of a web of lies and fraud and crime with more lies and fraud and crime.

It's tense and compelling and very well played. The pacing is great and all the details of Gere's moneyed world are very beleivably drawn in. The old american gigolo himself is still handsome and charming and actually acts the shit out of this one. Nice work everybody...

Then sunday arvo i'm playing at a new regular sunday thing at Transport in fed square, spinning soul, reggae, hip hop type flavour from 4 till 8. Looking forward to having a chance to play some hip hop records out in the world...

LOOPER (Rian Johnson, 2012)

Hey, it's that same good looking young guy I saw in the lame Batman movie last week. And he's that same good looking guy who was leaning all sexy like in the doorway in Mysterious Skin years ago. He's pretty good with the acting too!

This movie is pretty good also, but not as good as people making it out to be. It's pretty much as good as a real good episode of The Sopranos or something. Which is pretty good. But it ain't like Blade Runner or A Clockwork Orange or The Conformist or something, it ain't that good. The production design is a bit hokey sometimes and I didn't leave feeling quite altogether splayed out toe up satisfied, but i still had a good time and didn't get bored.

Really, this really should be about the minimum standard of all schlub hollywood popcorn movies you go and see. They can't all be classics, but there's really no reason that drawn out dull lame o duds like that fucking batman movie from last weekn should make it through the process...

Anyway, this one was purty good, I'd even go see it again! They did some whole prosthesis on the young guy to make him look more like Bruce Willis (he's supposed to be a young Bruce, it's a time travel thing) and he supposedly studied Bruceys movements and speech or whatever. I didn't think he looked or sounded a damn thing like Bruce, but that didn't bother me, i was happy to just go with it...
