TEARS OF THE BLACK TIGER (Wisit Sasanatieng, 2000)

It is nigh on impossible for me to convey to you the degree to which this movie completely rules. It's a Thai epic western melodrama tragedy with super eye frying colours and painted backdrops and fabulous hammy villains and pencil thin moustaches and also big handlebar moustaches and beautiful ladies and handsome men and tearjerking thai oldies numbers and the kind of super dramatic sentimental dialogue / monologues that would be terrible in a western movie but that in Asian movie with subtitles just tears me apart!

I saw this about 10 years ago and finally watched it again last night. It still fuckin' rules! The guy with the pencil thin moustache who plays Mahesuan has that old style overacting down SO hard, he was my hero of this one along with classic 60s / 70s thai action film star Sombat Metanee who was perfect as the gang boss Fai (especially when he had that bad ass older guy in a singlet charles bronson look going on, as seen above), but everything about it is great.

Twelve stars!

***************

Oh yeah, and I love this quote from the writer / director Wisit Sasanatieng about the old thai films of the 50s that inspired him: "Whenever the Film Archive screened an old film, I'd be there. Usually, I'd be the only one there", Wisit said in an interview at the Vancouver International Film Festival in 2000. "Most Thai audiences dislike Thai movies, especially the old ones, which they consider nam nao", he said, using the Thai language euphemism for the old films, which are viewed as stagnant and cliched. Literally, nam nao means "stinky water."

CON AIR (Simon West, 1997)

I just watched Con Air for the first time since 1997. And it was awesome. Non stop super high octane cheese. Within the first 2 minutes, there's a montage of glorious american military honour (there's this great voice over that says, "we thank you, AMERICA thanks you"), a massive super celine dion style power ballad accompanying a slow dance and kiss, and spot of deadly hand to hand combat in the rain. And that's not even mentioning the appearance of Nicholas Cage's awful southern accent...

And it just keeps on like that. There's no chance to get bored when everything moves so fast and everybody hams so hard. I wish all dumb movies were this much fun. There's this hilarious bit where Nicholas Cage's buddy has been shot (early on we see that his best buddy is a black dude so we know he isn't one of those racist southerners) and as he lays there bleeding he says "i'm getting to feel like God doesn't exist". Nicholas Cage replies "i'm gonna show you that God exists...", which he does by promptly beating up and killing a whole bunch of people.

The Villians have really great names too. John Malkovic is Cyrus "The Virus" Grissom. And it has an early appearance by Dave Chappelle! His name is Pinball.

I should be heading into the station to do my show now, but I think I'll stay home and watch The Rock instead. As i remember, in that one Nicholas Cage is some kind of beatles loving record collector desk jockey for a government agency who somehow gets caught up in an exciting action situation involving Sean Connery. On Alcatraz. And Sean Conner says, "Losers give up, Winners go home and fuck the prom queen". Or something like that...

ON THE RADIO

Gaaaaargh, i am overloaded with new records and I don't know which ones i'll get to play. I've got a heap of old timey stuff from the 20s and 30s lately so maybe a bunch of that. I got an LP of great unreleased "jungle rock" type stuff from this bongo player named "Chaino", so probably some of that. It has this one killer cut called "African Thunder", but it's all pretty great. I got this thing called "the new raunchy" i'm pretty into. Plus a great country thing written by our loverboy lincoln chase, and a great dark southern ov wright type thing written by our other loverboy dan penn. Plus some more song poem things probably. Many things!

Oh yeah, and we should have Cambodian Space project in the studio at some point, playing a few of their new cuts recorded in detroit with Dennis Coffey! And maybe some live in studio songs too...

To get off this list, reply saying: San Diego’s city council voted unanimously to accept the resignation of Mayor Bob Filner, who has been accused of sexual harassment by 18 women in the past six weeks. “He made me begin to feel like a 16-year-old again,” said one of Filner’s advisers, “with the vitality of his ideas.”
