UNDER THE SKIN (Jonathon Glazer, 2013)

I thought this movie was something of an artistic failure overall, but I still think it's interesting enough that people should go see it anyway! So if you haven't seen it, don't read this thing, just go see it clean.

Anyway for those who have seen it, whaddidyathink? For the first 20 minutes or so I was tingling like crazy, feeling like this was gonna be a goddamn masterpiece and we were witnessing the bloom of a great new filmaker. And then it started to get kind of repetitive and I started to worry. And then it just lost intensity altogether and dragged along for another hour and then wound up in a kinda cool but generally unfulfilling fashion.

Bit it's still stuck with me, and I wanna see it again. I thought the score by Mica Levi was phenomenal. I thought ScarJo did a good job with the British accent. With the nature of her character there wasn't really a great deal of acting to speak of, but she makes an excellent photography subject, and in that sense I think she was a good choice, she has a very iconic sort of look in the film that works great in the early parts.

I really do think this Jonathon Glazer has the making of a masterful filmaker. I loved Sexy Beast and I haven't seen The Birth but it looks amazing in the trailer. But then again, this looked amazing in the trailer too. It felt like they had the set-up for something really amazing, but they never figured out a way to do something satisfying with it. But plenty people think it's great all the way! What did you think?

ON THE RADIO

Shhheeeesh, so many musical greats dying lately. I will try to make some form of tribute to Teenie Hodges and Don Davis and Gerry Goffin and Horace Silver. We'll also have a live over the phone song and interview with Archer ahead of the last gig of his workers club residency on Sunday at about 5:40.

And in the second hour i'll be doing a retrospective look at the work of Jess Cornelius of Teeth & Tongue over the last 10 years or so, plus having her in for a little interview and a few acoustic songs in the studio.

Also probably some slow grinders, some lebanese belly dance music, and some other stuff too...

BIG BILL BROONZY - LOW LIGHT & BLUE SMOKE (Short Fim shot in Belgium, 1956)

I posted one song from this a while back, but recently I found the whole short film. Absolutelty mindboggling in it's coolness. That this exists is a great wonder and something to be thankful for.

It's on youtube, but they are being jerk offs and barring independent labels from youtube if they don't sign on their new music streaming service at a really stingy royalty rate. So lets watch it on daily motion instead!

HEAVY TRAFFIC (Ralph Bakshi, 1973)

Man, this thing blew my mind when my buddy Marty showed it to me in high school. I hadn't seen it for about 10 years and I didn't know how it'd hold up, but I watched it last night and I still think it's brilliant.

I always though Bakshi's first movie "Fritz The Cat" (a film adaptation of the Robert Crumb comics) was pretty corny, but that was really a director for hire job. After that was a success, he had the juice to make the movie he'd wanted to in the first place, Heavy Traffic.

It's violent and grotesque and definitely lacking in subtlety, but it's also funny and smart and beautiful and wild and creative and funky and eye popping and just so 70s noo yawk. It's no wonder when I finally visited New York in the 2000s I was kinda disappointed. It was like, "This ain't how I imagined it from watching Heavy Traffic over and over as a teenager!"

Oh yeah, and there's a lot of tits. Fabulous cartoon tits of all shapes and sizes that have that special cartoon sense of physics that makes them pop out of bras with a great thwacking sound.

So to report, Heavy Traffic is still great, i'm still in love with Carol, the bit pictured above with all the reversed models laughing at Michael is still freaky, everything is as it should be.

I had this on VHS for years (with that yellow cover up there!) and put it on the street along with all my other VHS tapes when I moved recently, hopefully some teenage kid with a VCR picked it up and is getting his brain fried by it right now (not bloody likely).

Thankfully the whole thing is on youtube in pretty good quality, so load it up, turn out the lights, get a little high if that's what you like to a do before a freaky movie, and enjoy!
