GREAT MOMENTS IN TECHNOLOGY #1: THE ITALIAN COFFEE MAKER THING
I love these things. You have three chambers, one on the bottom filled with water, one in the middle filled with ground up coffee beans, and one on the top filled with nothing. There's pipes connecting the bottom and top bits to the middle. As the water boils some kinda pressure forces it up the pipe and into the coffee chamber, where it smooshes all into the coffee and gets all coffeed up, and then as more water comes up the spout, it has to get out the dang way and make room ("quit hogging the coffee chamber" says the next bit of water, "how long you been in there?") and goes shooting up the next pipe and out into the top chamber. I love sitting there with the lid open waiting for the coffee to start spurting out the top of the pipe, and if you do it just right and keep the heat low, it doesn't spurt at all, it just comes over the lip of the spout and runs down the side of the pipe at such a perfect steady rate you can barely see it moving, you just see your pot of coffee filling up. It's like sacrificial blood running running down the altar in some kind of mayan virgin murder ceremony or something. I love making coffee with my italian coffee maker thing.
