New Big L! Some of it's really good too. Nobody could insult you quite like Big L. Just like John Swartzwelder books are the purest sort of comedy writing, basically just a string of gags, L's verses are the purest of battle raps, just an endless series of setups and punchlines, and they all fall perfectly in rhythm and make you go 'oooooooh' at how good the last punchline was while he's setting up the next.
Unfortunately he got murdered in '99 so he can't make any actual new records, but fortunately lots of this unreleased material is vintage DITC produced boombap from the early 90's, and the sounds are much more sympathetic to his flow than the kind of beats he was rapping over toward the end of his life.
Four bands in three studios with not one record played. That's the plan...

Part 3 in our series of crappy VHS tapes I found in a box on the street, Martin Sheen and Louis Gosset Jr star in the made for TV Masterpiece, The Guardian! After a murder on the stairs, a rape in the basement and some jehovahs witnesses in the air vents, Martin Sheen and the other residents of a fancy Manhattan apartment block decide to hire a full time security man. They end up with John Mack, who turns out to be a draconian fascist all too happy to smoke some junkie punk for trespassing. Which makes liberal Martin Sheen feel less than wholistic. Conflict ensues...
You really just gotta watch this for Louis Gosset Jr. He dresses sharp as fuck and just totally rules with his black fascist intensity. Particularly when he says they gotta cancel all deliveries, and an old lady says "but I like to get milk delivered for my cat", and Lou draws breath and gets this look in his eye and says all intense "I'll see you get your milk"...
Bout 20 past five we'll have a live in studio 5 perfromance from Mark Sultan (aka BBQ), plus more hillbilly stuff, maybe some Ariel Pink, who i have been going crazy for after seeing him and his band last week but whose recorded history I am finding to be, er, patchy, plus more Teeth and Tongue (whose sunday residency gigs at The Grace Darling have been most excellent, and how bout that new bass player? I asked where he came from and someone quipped "Planet Handsome"...) and Gentle Ben since they will both be playing live on the show next friday the 25th, along with Plague Doctor and The Ukeladies Orchestra. 4 bands in 3 studios with nary a record played! Let me know if you wanna come watch and we can arrange for names on the door. But thats next friday...
This friday we'll also have Miles H O'neil + Simoncee Page Jones performing their excellent country harmony styles live in the studio, and Blacktop from The Breadmakers will be coming in to spin some 45's ahead of their performance alongside Harmony and The Bangin Rackettes at the PBS Live Music Week Bash at Cherry on Saturday the 26th...

Thanks to Emma Peel for putting me onto this high concept website that marries three of the world greatest miracles: Waterfalls, Sandwiches and Tom Selleck.
Each shot spotlights a different great sandwich alongside tom and a waterfall. There's a nice theme song at the bottom of the page to listen to while you bask in the waters of selleck sandwiche. Heres a few faves:
Among other things I'll be spinning some hillbilly ballads and hillbilly bop and rockabilly r'n'b since that just seems to have been hillbilly satan's plan for my record finds this week, and my record spinning guest in the first hour will be Dave Gray (not the ugly one, the one with the muttonchops who used to play in Rocket Science), who'll be playing a selection of 60's fuzz 45's such as you might hear at the Go Go Postal! record party he's throwing this saturday at The Penny Black.

Jesus Fuck. This may be the most rulingest movie ever. Its like a super japanese gonzo baby sitters club teen horror comedy melodrama. It's so inventive. And it looks amazing. And it's hilarious. And it never gets boring! Not for the slightest second. It totally makes me wish I was a 14 year old pothead girl so I could enjoy it even more!
By the time he made 'Hausu' (his debut feature), Obayashi was already famous as a director of experimental short films and equally experimental advertisements. The way he saw it, in exchange for access to the advertising companies superior film stock and equipment, the "theme" of his films would thereafter be the product up for sale.
By the late 70's, the japanese film industry was in panic and decline. Much like Hollywood in the early 60's, studio executives just didn't feel they knew what people wanted anymore, and thus, they were willing to let a first timer who seemed 'cutting edge' and 'on the ball' like Obayashi do whatever the hell he liked with their money. And thus we have this bananas movie!
With the idea and many of the images based upon Obayashi's daughters teenage ramblings about how scary it would be if the house were to attack and eat you, upon release in Japan there were lines around the block to see the film, with nary a single patron over 14! Truly he had made the greatest, funniest, stupidest, smartest, freakiest teen film of them all. Never released before outside Japan, it's finally been subtitled and given a theatrical run around the US and a DVD release through Eureka.
The influence of Obayashi faves like Jean Luc Godard and Mario Bava is apparent in some of the visual tricks and lighting, but really "Hausu" is like nothing I've ever seen and I wish to thank Lucy Dyson (see interview below) for greatly enriching my life with it!
