THE MAMBO KINGS PLAY SONGS OF LOVE (Oscar Hijuelos, 1989)

A million thanks to Amanda Roff for passing this book onto me before she went to America. Truly one of the most delicious things I've ever read...

It's basically an old Cuban musician holed up in the New York hotel room where he used to fuck innumerable pretty ladies, drinking himself to death and looking back on his life, particularly the times when he and his brother Nestor moved to New York in the late forties and became "The Mambo Kings". As the story takes it's ups and downs, his memories digress into other characters and we get their back stories too.

The writing is so rich it's basically poetry all the way, that sumptuous lusty Latin kind of poetry, and the constant mouth watering, brain fizzing descriptions of food and sex and mambo music had my dying to indulge in all three at once. A very frustrating novel to read on a cramped bus!

Here's a couple non-sequential pages to give you a feel for it...

KING JAMES VERSION - "HE'S FOREVER"

Spent the day listening through the latest big box set from The Numero Group, this one focusing on things recorded at the Boddie Recording Company of Cleveland, Ohio.

Lotsa great stuff on there, fuzzed out psychedelic jams and sweet vocal group soul and messy funk skronkers, but an immediate favourite is this joint "He's Forever" by a couple of guys who had a kind of old testament bible stage show, where they dressed up like Methuselah (see pic above) and worked it with a hard funk band. They just did one single, recorded live on stage, the B side of which is this intense vamp on the "midnight cowboy" theme. They laugh, they cry, they praise his name! The Lord's, not John Voight's. Enjoy, and if you got the scratch, buy the whole boxset!

SCREAMING SOVIET HEATER

Caught up with my old chum Martin Kay aka Mountian Black and dug some of the stuff he'd been doing during his recent 6 month stint in Armenia and surrounds, teaching kids about sound and making recordings off all sorts of crumbling soviet junk with his magical underwater microphone.

There was lots of cool stuff, you can dig it all at with great pictures at

but this recording of the noises his old soviet heater would make when he turned it on each night was the highlight of my evening!

This recording of a melodica played in a giant derelict oil tank is another favourite

Big Jay McNeely

Seeing Big Jay play at the corner to a scant hundred people three years ago was one of the greatest experiences I've had. These kids don't look silly to me, cause I was there on my knees with my head in the bell of his horn, getting my brains blown out and making that same face. There something about big jay's sound, he's playing the same instrument as every other tenor saxophonist, but the way he blows it, it just sounds bigger and louder and richer and honkiner than everybody else.

A lotta the time when you see these older acts, you kinda taking your chances on what they gonna be like, but I can testify as your taste tester that Big Jay still got the honk to drive you into a transcendental frenzy. So don't stooge yourself and miss out! The guys 84 years old, so he's probably not gonna tour THAT many more times...

He plays Sat Nov 19th at The Corner

and Sunday Nov 20th at Caravan Music Club in Oakleigh

I'll be airing an interview I did with him on the show tomorrow and playing a bunch of his music, but in the meantime here's a couple of his honkers to groove on

And here's a clip of him on the Ray Martin show back in '89! Dig the part where he sits on Tom Cruises lap...

on the radio, in the world 10/11/11

ON THE RADIO

First hour i'll be airing an interview with Big Jay McNeely and playing a whole bunch of his records to try and ensure as few of you miss out on seeing this legendary indestructible honker as possible.

Then in the second hour Woody McDonald, booker of the Golden Plains festival and doer of the excellent RRR show Primary Colours will be coming in to play a bunch of the acts from next March's Golden Plains.

And around those two things i'll try to play some of the groovy records i found up in sydney on the weekend, including the great Patti Palladin & Johnny Thunders version of 'crawfish' from '85. It's junktastic!

IN THE WORLD

Friday night I'll down in geelong at mr Hydes, and Saturday night me and G& be doing SATURDAY NIGHT FISH FRY at The Gem. Lotsa other stuff on too. if you get a chance, go see Royal Headache on Friday night, i saw 'em last weekend in Sydney and they were bloody amazing!

LIL B - 'JUSTIN BEIBER'

I like this guy. I find his rampant, ever smiling publicity seeking opportunism rather amusing. He names his songs after mega-celebrities to get more web search hits. He called his album "I'm Gay" just to get attention. And he is the king of the 'cooking' dance craze where one mimics the actions of of cooking. Stirring, mixing, flipping and so forth. Most of his actual music is resolutely awful, but I am rather taken with the dubbed out quality of his latest youtube hit, "Justin Beiber"...

Woody mcDonald hipped me to another pretty dope one he did a while back with his teenage hyphy group The Pack. Nice bassline...

Oh yes, and here he is with his cooking dance instructional video. Get cooking!
