PUMPKINHEAD (Stan Winston, 1988)

Thanks to Dr Wayne Jobson, king of bad movie rentals, for making me watch this awesome kick ass bad movie. Some punk city kids run over shitsville roadside store owner lance henriksons kid with their dirtbikes and then flee the scene, so he goes to the creepy old hillbilly gypsy woman and gets her to conjure up the town revenge monster to eat and eviscerate them. Which he does. His head don't really look much like any pumpkin I ever saw, but maybe they got them some special mongo down-home pumpkins in that part of the world.

It's the first time special effects dude Stan Winston directed a movie, and it fucking rules. Totally gnarly and flavourful and enjoyenating the whole way through. Why can't all bad movies be this good???

Being a crazy Arnold fan as a kid, it's amazing i never watched this movie before. To be honest it's too damn hot for me to be bothered writing much about it now, but suffice to say, it's truly one of the great pop culture documentaries, right up there with Style Wars, Arnold is hilarious, and even if you've already seen it back in the day, you should see again! It takes on another level of crazy knowing now that he became not only the worlds biggest action star but also the Governator of California...

I found a copy of the VHS on the street, but you can get it on DVD or watch the whole thing in parts on youtube

Northern Skronk superstars "Puta Madre Bros" gonna be doing a set live from studio 5 at about 5:30. And i'll be playing plenty o' northern skronk anthems all through the program for all you northern skronk beleivers. Northern Skronk forever!

Toward the closing of the fantastic Jimmy Scott documentary I posted about a few weeks ago (see HERE), there was a montage set to a crackly record of Jimmy's I'd never heard before, a beautiful floating thing with a subtle vibraphone part and a chorus of low doo-wopping male voices behind him. Checking the credits I found it was a number called "Home" that came out on King in 1958. I snapped up the one copy I found for sale on the web, and since it doesn't seem to appear anywhere on the internet, let alone on CD or LP, I thought i'd post it up here. Enjoy....

Can't believe i never watched this sucker till the other night. It was equal parts brilliant and stupid, but in the end the lines gotta fall on the side of brilliant. The very concept is so great it couldn't possibly go too far wrong. The deal is, aliens have infiltrated all stratas of society disguised as humans. But then a lonesome drifter (played by Rowdy Roddy Piper!) stumbles on a special pair of sunglasses that lets him see them in their real skull-face freaky form. His response? Grab a shotgun and start gunning them down!

It's not 100% quality, but there's plenty of great scenes, including a ridiculous 15 minute brawl between Rowdy and Keith David all over Keith refusing to try on the sunglasses.

Recommended!

AAARRRGGGGHHHHH these guys are just toooooo photogenic!

A million thanks to Burr Henley who read my mind and called me up to offer me his ticket to Hall & Oates that he couldn't use. The very day before i'd chucked on that "rock & soul pt 1" best of hall & oates record (the one with red and yellow shapes on the cover) and been rhapsodised once again by how many jammin hit songs they had and how different they all sounded from one another. I even emailed the brides to say we should try to cook up a sort hiccupy rockabilly version of 'you make my dreams come true' at our rehearsal on thursday. But I then had to say i wouldn't be able to make it to rehearsal cause I had to learn the song AT THE FOOT OF HALL & OATES THEMSELVES!!!! i love it when all paths lead to hall & oates...

Here's some early Philly Soul hall and oates from '73 (with unbelievably excellent low budget video with darryyl looking like bowie), later covered by Lou Rawls and Tavares



Some great mid 70's proggy period hall and oates with dope guitar solo by todd rundgren (Hall even did a solo album with robert fripp a couple years later)



Perhaps my favourite early 80's hall & oates soul-pop number

And finally, a great little known hall and oates number about a subway slasher tormented by doo wop voices in his head, writer after the "son of sam" david berkowitz had claimed their song "rich girl" had inspired him to kill...



PS. Little know hall & oates / the terminator crossover factoid. Brad Fiedel, composer of the classic theme from The Terminator, was briefly a touring keyboardist for H&O during the late seventies!
