Gary ‘Spider’ Webb – The Cave pt1 & 2 (Bamboo, 1961)

A favourite for Halloween!

I just had about had a heart attack of insane gushing record nerd pleasure the first time I heard this exotic surf beatnik jazz freakout cum psychosexual teenage radio drama. One rainy night Julie and Jimmy get lost in a cave. Over the next two and half minutes they desperately call each other’s names and yell things like “Look out for that bat! Aaaarggghhh!” while tremoloed guitars and evil organs stab and slide and poke them all over the place. Bandleader Gary ‘Spider’ Webb lays down the heavy jungle beat and gets extra wild and jazzy whenever something scary is happening to Jimmy and Julie. And it only gets better / worse on side 2! “I’ve got to find Julie and get out of this cave. It’s been two long days…”

Gary Webb was fittingly enough a touring member of the Hollywood Argyles, a made up studio group that songwriter / producer Gary Paxton had sent to the top of the charts with ‘Alley Oop’ in 1960. In 1962 he did it again with Bobby ‘Boris’ Pickett’s immortal ‘Monster Mash’. In between the two Gary Webb made his own stab at horror hitmaking, but no avail. Still, I’m sure he’d be pleased to know that 51 years later, Jimmy and Julie are still stuck in that cave and our hearts.

You can hear my uncle Nosferichie1250 playing 2 hours of spooky records, including both sides of this one,

DARREN SYLVESTER - OFF BY HEART (Chapter, 2013)

This new Darren Sylvester album is just so Darren Sylvestery, in that particular Darren Sylverster way. In all his various art practices, Darren seems to have a hangup about recreating things, usually strange pieces of pop culture that have lodged in his brain somehow ( see his bizarre photographic recreation of a scene from the extremely non memorable 2005 film version of the video game "Doom" here ). The things is though, no matter how referential and recreational his work gets, there always a whole heap of Darren Sylvester in there. This album is like that.

The sonic pallete is a perfect approximation of early 80s electonic pop / soft rock (the female backing vocals are just spookily right on), but unlike the arch retro sleaze of Chromeo or even much of the actual early 80s chart pop it sounds like, genuine feeling seems to pours out of each of these songs. And songs they are! With the right gear it's easy enough to make something that sounds like it was recorded in 1983, but Darren somehow has the knack of making these things sound like HITS from 1983. I liked his style on the first album but it never really got it's hooks in me and made me go back to listen again. I listened to this one three times last night and i can't wait to hear it again! I particularly love track 5, "Hurts To Say", where he lets the drum machines take a rest and says it all with strummed guitar, those perfect female female BV's and some perfectly timed melodramatic cymbal splashes. A little drum machine comes in eventually, but it's very tasteful, and very Darren Sylvestery...

It's available on CD, LP and DL from Chapter Music here

http://chaptermusic.com.au/

or you can get it at local shops or at the album launch at The Kelvin Club on November 8th, where he'll be playing with Fatti Frances and Montero. Great venue, great support acts, great album. Good show, Darren...

SLOW GRIND FEVER #6 @ THE TOTE UPSTAIRS (SLOW CLUB) THIS SAT OCT 19TH

After a month off, Melbourne's only slow dance party, SLOW GRIND FEVER returns this month slower, sleazier and smokier. It's the place where the lights are red and dim, the liquor is brown and strong, we play the slowest, spookiest, sleaziest, sweetest old records we can find, and you dance real sloooow like, by yourself or pressed up against somebody else. Either way, its a real good time...

SLOW GRIND FEVER #6
with DJ's Richie1250, Pierre Baroni & Mohair Slim
Sat October 19th - Upstairs at The Tote (Slow Club)

9pm till 2am - $5

DON CARSON AND THE CASUALS - YES MASTER! bw/ JUNGLE BUNGALOW (Bertram International Records, 1958)

As a certain kind of record creep, YES MASTER! IS just exactly the kind of record you hope to come across as you travel the spaceways. It's got the songwriting pedigree from cave living, cross country walking exotica king Eden Ahbez, it's on an obscure Hawaiian rock and roll label, and the sounds carved into the wax are equally delicious and hilarious.

My favourite things about this record:

- The pulsing bass line
- The super hi fi reverby sound of the woman summoning double claps
- the way the "master" sounds so weedy and short and bald
- the perky, breathy way the slave girls ham up their delivery of "yes master!"
- the way they wave out the word "hour" in the line "...or does the master feel like love - this very hour"

The b side is pretty damn cute too, in a Gilligans Island sort of way...

So far as i can tell, Bertram International was a Hawaiian label that put out records like "Hula Rock and Roll" and "A Christmas Aloha for You" from about 1958 to 1960, a few more in 1964, and a compilation of earlier singles and unreleased cuts in 1979 called "Rockabilly 1958".

Bob Bertram himself released some numbers as an artist and co-wrote todays selection with Eden Ahbez, who it seems wrote a bunch of things for the label. Was he living in Hawaii for a time? Anybody know?

I'd love to hear some more stuff on this label if anybody has some too...

Don Carson & the Casuals - Yes Master!

Don Carson & the Casuals - Jungle Bungalow

THE GRAVEDIGGERS - MOVE IT (Crypt, 1989)

My buddy Jason's old southern california band "The Gravediggers" just had their first album re-issued by Crypt, and i can't believe how much it burns all the way through. It's just got so much atitooood.

Here's a bunch of the songs that are on YouTube, but the whole thing is great. i recommend ye order one direct from the crypt website or tell your local record spot to get it in stock quick like...

JOHN TRAVOLTA - SANDY (Polydor, 1978)

I fuckin love Grease. I love it more the older i get. I sat and listened to the whole Grease soundtrack album tonight, and i could have picked any number of songs to enthuse about, but right now I can't go past "Sandy". Travolta's monologue in the middle is just priceless...

MAGIC MIKE (Steven Soderbergh, 2012)

It's about time they made the male stripper movie! Some beefcake for the ladies and men who like watching muscly hunks gyrate, a tittilating peek into into an unknown world for the regular joes, a bit of coming of age action for the younguns. And it's pretty good too! It's very Flashdance, i might go so far as to call it the Flashdance of this generation, what with the sexy dance setpieces and the popular music and the spunky aspirational lead character and the romance and so forth.

It's a Steven Soderbergh film, so it's at that level of quality that it's all pretty tastefully done and it's smart enough to be a legit movie, but it's pretty forgettable all the same. But everybody acts good and the dialogue is nice and the dance sequences are pretty great and hilarious.

A good one to watch when you don't want your intelligence insulted, but you don't want to use it too much either!
