EVERY MORNING I SEE THE WIND

This week's morning writings were OK. Nothing too great. But them's the breaks. Maybe next week. Today I thought i'd try more of a personal thoughts stream of consciousness rather than the absurdist silliness I usually do...

EVERY MORNING I SEE THE WIND

Every morning I see the wind. I see it wrap itself around the leaves and dance with them. And every morning I think perhaps I will write about the wind, but I can't write about the wind every day. It makes me think of young lovers on the park bench like in that old Nolan Strong number. It makes me think of wicked winds a coming and evil carnivals coming with them. But mostly it makes me think of a certain woman and pictures of her riding a tram on a certain day and the way I felt watching the wind that day. Duke Ellington was drifting out loud and clear from the house and the sun was shining and I could feel a phantasmic current connecting us across the city and I felt buoyant and serene and on a plateau of pleasure and contentment that is rare indeed.

CAB CALLOWAY - SKETCHES

This isn't a particularly great or in-depth documentary as far as they go, but it's a good introduction to the man and it's cool to see his kids, who are now quite elderly themselves, talking about him. Plus there's some cool footage of his sister Blanche, who was a pioneering black female bandleader and brought him into the game. Worth a watch!

Definitely worth watching are the actual old film shorts from the 30's like this one. Pure gold.

And if you can't get enough Cab, check the Hi De Ho Blog for all the Cab you could want...

ON THE RADIO

I think we will have a bunch of girl group records. Maybe some wavy gravy new zealand LSD music. I did an interview with Nick Waterhouse during the week, so i'll probably play that (he's playing at womadelaide and golden plains). Probably a couple by Sugar Fed Leopards who have their LP launch on friday night. Other stuff too!

Also, don't forget next week is live music week on PBS! As usual i'll be doing an all live show with nary a record played. Will have sets from Primitive Calculators, Time For Dreams and Habits, plus several other guest appearances. If you wanna come and watch and drink some free coopers, follow these instructions:

You and a friend can come down to any (or all!) of the sessions during the week to see your favourite bands playing in the studios.

Send us an email at events@pbsfm.org.au with the subject line: NIGHT (Monday, Tuesday) plus YOUR NAME and MEMBERSHIP NUMBER in the body, whether you want to bring a friend, and we’ll put your name on the door.

THE WHOLE WORLD WAS MADE OF SILK

Here's today's entry from WRITING EVERY MORNING , my improvised writing project.

THE WHOLE WORLD WAS MADE OF SILK

The whole world was made of silk. White silk. People and trees and dogs and cars and the ground and the sky and the lights and the bikes. All slippery smooth silk rubbing pleasantly up against each other. All day long forever, everything would be constantly rubbing up against something else and saying, "ooooooh, that feels goooooooooooood." Then one day the ground began to split open and a huge split was rent in the world. Everybody and everything tumbled down into a place that was nought but craggy masses of denim. "Oh silken lord!" they wailed, gnashing theirs silken teeth together. "What have we done to forsake ye?"

WRITING EVERY MORNING

A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT (Ana Lily Amirpour, 2014)

I reeeaaaaaly enjoyed this. It's a bit TOO cool, which makes it somewhat less cool, but all the same it IS pretty fuckin cool. And even though the director has said she's not really into Jim Jarmusch, the whole aesthetic is so reminiscent of his late 80s / early 90s movies and that general early 90s indie art film vibe that you can't help but feel a bit like "people already did this whole thing to death 20 years ago". But that aside, I think it's a pretty great movie, and the particular combination of elements makes it somewhat original in it's own way. If I was an Iranian teenager watching this on a bootleg DVD, I reckon i'd think it was the coolest thing of all time. And Arash Marandi, who plays the main guy, jesus what a heartthrob. If there's any justice in the world he should be a poster on every teenage girls wall this year. I thought all the actors were pretty great though. Oh yeah, I haven't really explained anything about the film. Anyway, it's an Iranian vampire western noir teen romance kinda thing. It's shot in California and the film-maker is Iranian / American (she grew up in England and America but her parents are Iranian), but the dialogue is all in farsi and it's set in a kind of fictional Iranian ghost town. It's on at ACMI almost every day for another couple weeks, so don't stooge yourself, go see it...

THE WONDROUS SMELL OF A CENTIPEDE

Here's my favourite entry from the last weeks WRITING EVERY MORNING. I like it because it's creepy and gross...

THE WONDROUS SMELL OF A CENTIPEDE
The wondrous smell of a centipede drifted up from the garden into the little boy's nose, like that of a pie cooling on a window sill. The boy knew he must have this centipede in his fangs immediately, or the pent up need would cause him to murder his whole family and be dubbed "The Damien of Sherrybrook". But it wasn't true, he was no demon seed, just a plump young thing filled with desire, and he would not let his desires cause his family harm. Only the centipede. He vaulted over the windowsill and scurried face first into the garden, snout wiggling and snorting, fire in his eyes, his whole body twisting. To catch the centipede, he would become the centipede.

NIGHTCRAWLER (Dan Gilroy, 2014)

I don't want to explain anything about this one because I think it's best to go in clean like I did. But suffice to say it is very dark and quite perfect and you should see it.

It's amazingly assured for a first film, but writer/director Dan Gilroy is 55 years old and has been in the business in some capacity since co-writing the awful (I liked it when I was a kid though) Emilio Estevez sci-fi picture Freejack in 1992. Check that one for some fine shitty acting by Mick Jagger. Anyway, I'm glad he finally got around to directing a film. I can't wait to see what he does next.

WRITING EVERY DAY

I have started a new writing project. Every morning I open this page and type improvised nonsense for about 3 minutes without stopping. Then I press publish. No pausing. No editing.

You can follow it here.

http://writingeverymorning.blogspot.com.au/

It was was nice for a while when I was writing pretty good ones every day, but then I started writing some crappy ones and having to publish them anyway and that was less nice. But I shall forge on!

This my favourite one so far...

MOLASSES

Molasses was everywhere. We were very sticky. Waking up in such a sticky, molasses filled room is disturbing at the best of times, but when you have just been reincarnated as a kangaroo baby, it can be simply too much to bear. When a bear started to run toward us, roaring in hunger, I thought I may have a heart attack. But the bear too was stuck in the molasses, unable to move, and his roars of hunger became sad, confused whimpers. We stared into each others eyes, and that special moment was a watershed in bear / baby kangaroo relations. We were truly the same.

ANN MILLER - TOO DARN HOT (1953)

Thanks to Helen who really made my day with this clip from the film Kiss Me Kate. From Ann Millers exuberant tap dancing all over the coffee table to the swinging latin jazz backing to the beatnik asides from the very square looking band ("crazy man!" "go, girl!" "nervous, man!" "make me know it!") to the amused husband and the less amused wife and the great fan action, it's all just toooooooooooooooooo much...

SLOW GRIND FEVER #20 guest mix by ACTION PAT

Since we didn't do a mix for New Years Eve, here's a fantastic guest mix from our man in Florida, ACTION PAT. You can see him pictured above at some kind of "cook out" in the earlier part of the century. He still looks pretty much the same. I'm not sure why he has a flaming record in his tongs, perhaps it is to ward off marauding alligators. Anyway, Pat puts on the "Southernmost Soul Party" every month in Florida, which always has fabulously blinging flyer art. check it out HERE

He also runs the JESTER WILD website with Chris Redlich, which houses an astonishing archive of great mixes by record collectors from across the globe, and has monthly record sales too.
