JIMMY SCOTT: IF YOU ONLY KNEW (Matthew Buzzell, 2004)

I've been really into Jimmy Scott recently, particularly his 1969 album "The Source", and this beautiful documentary really gave me a deeper insight into him as a person and an artist. It features extensive interviews with the man himself, his friends and family and his biographer David Ritz, as well as lots of fantastic footage of him performing in Japan in the early 2000's. I highly recommend it. It's out on DVD (I rented it at The Movie Reel in Westgarth). Without laying his whole story out, I'll simply say that Jimmy Scott has had a hard row to hoe, and his resilience and depth of character is nothing short of remarkable. And his voice and phrasing only to seem to get more beautiful with age.

Here's a couple video's to hopefully peak your interest.

This is a short that director Matthew Buzzell made on Jimmy (I would image as a way to get funding to make the feature. it comes as an extra on the dvd).

Here's Jimmy's appearance on the last episode of Twin Peaks

And here's his revelatory take on "Unchained Melody", from "The Source"

PS

You should listen to the audio commentary on the DVD, it has great extra stories on it, including one hilarious one about the REAL Caldonia a teenage circumcision on the road...

SEAN BONNIWELL R.I.P

I freakin' love The Music Machine. They had just the right combination of brilliantly thought out arrangements and thuggish punk beat, of brooding dark lyrics and sly humour. So much to love, so much evil fuzz guitar and and brain slicing farfisa and brilliant propulsive basslines and weird turnarounds and great echoey claps... And their all black with one black glove uniform is equally cool and stupid and endearing.

The buzzing brain behind The Music Machine, Sean Bonniwell, blinked out from lung cancer on the 20/12/11. I'll play a whole bunch of his work on the show this week, but here's a few faves for now...

GREAT MOMENTS IN TECHNOLOGY #1: THE ITALIAN COFFEE MAKER THING

I love these things. You have three chambers, one on the bottom filled with water, one in the middle filled with ground up coffee beans, and one on the top filled with nothing. There's pipes connecting the bottom and top bits to the middle. As the water boils some kinda pressure forces it up the pipe and into the coffee chamber, where it smooshes all into the coffee and gets all coffeed up, and then as more water comes up the spout, it has to get out the dang way and make room ("quit hogging the coffee chamber" says the next bit of water, "how long you been in there?") and goes shooting up the next pipe and out into the top chamber. I love sitting there with the lid open waiting for the coffee to start spurting out the top of the pipe, and if you do it just right and keep the heat low, it doesn't spurt at all, it just comes over the lip of the spout and runs down the side of the pipe at such a perfect steady rate you can barely see it moving, you just see your pot of coffee filling up. It's like sacrificial blood running running down the altar in some kind of mayan virgin murder ceremony or something. I love making coffee with my italian coffee maker thing.
