THE CULTURAL GOOFBALLS ON WHICH I AM CURRENTLY HOPPED UP

A DANGEROUS METHOD (David Cronenberg, 2011)

Just went and saw this new Cronenberg the other night. It's not very Cronenbergy (he didn't write it), but it's still an interesting portrait of the infantile days of pyschotherapy (or 'the talking cure' as they call it, "I'm going to try this new treatment a bloke called Sigmund Freud has proposed. I'm not going to electric shock you or burn you at the stake or anything. We're just going to talk...") and the relationships between Freud and Jung and Sabina Spielrein. Not enough Freud though! Vigo Mortenson totally kills it as Freud but he's only in it for about a quarter of the movie. The rest is some poncy guy playing Jung with either this very pretty bird who is okay but not all that great as Spielrein or some other bird as his uptight wife. And those bits are not all that compelling. But all the stuff between freud and Jung is great. Oh yeah,  and there's some other good bits with Vincent Cassell as some other psychotherapist, Otto somebody. As usual with Vincent Cassell, he's a total sleazeball and a pleasure to have on screen.
Overall, nowhere near as fuckyeah as History of Violence or Eastern Promises, but still worth seeing for historical interest and to dig Vigo No-Pants as the the frude dude from bill and ted excellent adventure...

On The Radio, In The World... 26/5/12

ON THE RADIO

Some Ready Steady Go! type records (new breed r'n'b, soul jazz, popcorn, boogaloo and other conjunctions of words that are probably meaningless unless you're a record nerd), some 80's hip hop like "I Need A Rolex" (i love song titles like that) by Toddy Tee, something off that Sean Paul album that was huge ten years ago or so that i just bought a copy of (oh the memories, when everybody had that 'shake that thing miss canna canna, jody and the one named rebecca' song as their ringtone), and of course some OTHER STUFF TOO!

IN THE WORLD

Sat I'll be having a stall down at the YahYahs record fair from 12-5. Then at night I'm very pleased to be making my debut appearance at the monthly Ready Steady Go! record party down in the Grace Darling dungeon alongside Emma Peel and Pierre Baroni. Man, old records sound soooooo good down in that dungeon... and then afterwards i'll be heading back across the road to yahyahs to spin 'em over there till 5am!

Next friday night (may 4th) Richie1250 & The Brides Of Christ gonna be doing our first gig in about six months at Cherry, with Dirt Farmer and Major Tom & The AToms, who are launching their groovy Tom Jones-esque single "the House That Love Built". We on first, probably about nine. Got some good new songs for ya!

LOGAN'S RUN (Michael Anderson, 1976)

Can you believe it took me this long to watch Logan's Run? The first thing that ran through my head was, "I sure hope in the future we don't really all dress this badly". Among the many bad things in this abysmal yet amusing film, the costume design is right down there!
I won't attempt to explain the premise of this movie, but suffice to say, it's a silly future world in a dome and our man Logan, who manages to be super goofy and noxiously smug at the same time, finds himself in a situation where he and a girl wearing as little as possible have to go on the run from his home town (a kind of futurisic texas shopping mall) through various different 'worlds'. Peter Pan Slum World, Ice World, Sex Orgy World, Ice World, Desert World, Rusty Ship World. I can just imagine him thinking, 'geez, all these other worlds aren't as nice as sex orgy world...'

Pretty everything about it is extremely average and hokey, but it somehow still manages to be a charming and enjoyable watch. There are some good trip out bits with loud synthesizers squelching all over the place, a nice turn by Peter Ustinov as a cute mumbling hermit with lots of cats, and it's worth watching just to meet this guy.

His name is Box. I thought the scene he was in was gonna be some kind of stupid finale, but it just kept on going another 30 stupid minutes or so...

On The Radio, In The World... 19/4/12

ON THE RADIO

What indeed. 2 different versions of the green hornet theme? Andrew Love, saxman of The Memphis Horns, died during the week, so definitely some stuff he played on. Also maybe some 'exotic' sounding things since i'll be playing at LuWow later in the evening...

I'll also be filling in for Mohair Slim on Blue Juice this Sunday from 11am-1pm, with a guest DJ spot around midday by Tony & Sue from The Exotics...

IN THE WORLD

Friday night i'll be DJ'ing at The LuWow bar from 9 till 2, with live sets from Hanks Jalopy Demons at 10:15 and The Savages (resident LuWow frat party band) at 11:45.

Saturday night i'll be DJ'ing in the front bar of the corner hotel down in richmond from 11-3am.

Next Sat (april 28), I'll be having a stall down at the YahYahs record fair from 12-6.

NTER - My Line (teenage sydney hip hop gold)

I haven't really paid a great deal of attention to Australian hip hop since the early 2000s. Once the hilltop hoods blew up and it became apparent that triple j would actually play your gear if you made it slick enough, most of the stuff I heard just seemed a bit insipid. So thanks to DJ Big OG For President for playing me this little gem and reminding me that there's still some proper amateurish snotty teenage graffitti kid hip hop out there. Brings me back to the days of yore!

If you dug this, check all the other stuff on the eshrecords youtube channel, they got plenty more where that came from!

ON THE RADIO

Flying saucer the THIRD! I didn't even know it existed. Got a great bawdy XXXXX rated female blues thing called "big dick" for you as well...

IN THE WORLD

This Saturday night i'm looking forward to getting down in the big old dancehall at the trades hall once again for SOUL A GO GO! Will be me and pierre and miss goldie and callum flack, so between us i'm sure we'll have something you'll like!

And the satdee after (the 14th) i'll be back at the Gem for SATURDAY NIGHT FISH FRY, where my guest Dj will be that moustached briton Simon Laxton. Simon and I share an affinity for stoopid halloween records, so expect some of this mixed into the usual gumbo of southern soul, r'n'b, popcorn, tittyshakers and the like...
