Paul Wibier - "Satan" (Born Mean), 1969

For a little while I was having a hard time being interested in anything other than this song...

It's from a biker movie I have yet to see called "Satan's Sadists". A mystery man going by the name "Harley Hatcher" composed and arranged the soundtrack, and though it's quite a cult item, to me most of it's fairly forgettable. Thankfully the best song on it slipped out as a promo 45 at some point, and slipped into my hands recently. The organy 70's arrangement and the croony singing is pretty great, but really it's all about the lyrics.

All together now...

"I was born mean
By the time I was 12
I was killing
killing for Satan..."

PAUL WIBIER - SATAN

On The Radio, In The World... 28/6/12

ON THE RADIO

I got this killer 45 with these mariachi horns and the lyrics "I was born mean, by the time I was 12, I was killing, killing for satan...". And I got lotsa other new stuff too. But none of it's quite as cool as that...

IN THE WORLD

Will be having a stall down at the yahayhs record fair again this saturday arvo from midday, come by and have a yak about records!

THE FUGITIVE KIND (Sidney Lumet, 1959)

A funny one, this! One can't help but feeling that it's nobody involved's best work and it doesn't quite add up to being a completely satisfying experience, but there's so much great stuff going on in there you can't ignore it either.
It's about a New Orleans musician / gigolo named Val Xavier (Brando) who turns 30 and decides to quit the nightlife and try to settle down in a small southern town. He gets a job in a general store owned by a dying, cancer ridden old bigot and run by his love starved Italian wife, Lady (Anna Magnani). Of course Val, sick to his stomach of playing loverboy, soon finds himself pursued by Lady and local outcast wild child rich girl Carol (Joanne Woodward) and every other horny teenage girl in town. It's all bound to end in tragedy of course...

The script was seen as being one of Tennessee Williams lesser works ( it was his first produced play and had previously flopped twice on Broadway under different names) and there are times when I thought to myself "Geez, Tennessee Williams sure does like laying on this Tennessee Williams shit doesn't he", but as Sideny Lumet says, "i'd rather work on Tennessee Williams weakest script than somebody else's strongest...", and I tend to agree. It gets a bit florid at times but it's really very good writing and miles ahead of just about every other film you watch in terms of depth and sensitivity and characterization.

It's shot really beautifully too, and the acting is uniformly excellent. I've heard other people saying Joanne Woodward is overdoing it and letting down the side in her desperate tramp role, but personally I thought she was brilliant and just about the best thing in the whole movie.

Special mention should also be made of the excellent soundtrack by Kenyon Hopkins. There's a great scene where brando is working in the store and trying to avoid some teenage girls treating him like piece of meat so he puts on this old blues record with this evil groove and turns it right up. I thought it must have been a pre-existing record but it turns out it was another piece of Kenyon Hopkins music. I dunno if it's him singing, but what a record!

It also led me to a great website done by a DJ in Texas where he's put up a hundred 45's that fit into that film-noir kind of groove under the banner "The Lonely Beat - 100 themes from The Naked City". He's also down a similar thing of 100 Exotica 45's. Dig it!

Anto Macaroni of The Puta Madre Bros will be coming in to spin some new records he picked up during their tour of europe at about 6pm, My Bloody Valentine's first few EP's and LP's have just been re-released so perhaps we'll have a bit of an MBV orgy, I just copped a copy of the twangy guitar laden john barry soundtrack to the film "beat girl", so maybe we'll have something from that and some duane eddy and some other twangy things, and possible some other stuff too...

DAS BOOT directors cut (Wolfgang Petersen, 1981)

Jesus Christ. I think I should be able to apply for some kind of post traumatic stress syndrome pension after watching this thing at The Astor last night. What a fucking movie. I generally have a rule, if i'm watching a movie and I don't like it after half an hour, I turn it off. But if it's a German movie, I only give it fifteen minutes. Well this went for three and a half hours and I was engrossed all the way. Great acting, excellent photography, pathos, it's all there! I love the way it become so much about THE BOAT too, the captain might be extremely jaded with the regime but he still loves his U-Boat! What a boat she is! Great one to see at The Astor too, seeing these amazing nice grainy 'through the periscope' shots on the giant Astor screen in 35mm had me dribbling all over myself...

TWILIGHT ZONE: THE DUMMY (Abner Biberman, 1962)

Goddamn dolls are scary. I happened to pick out the twilight zone DVD the other night that had four freaky doll / evil inanimate object episodes in a row and it was one of the most harrowing evenings of my life. The Horror!

"The Dummy" is a classic episode about a shaky alcoholic ventiloquist who is maybe schizophrenic or maybe his dummy is ALIVE.

I couldn't find the entirety of "the dummy" on youtube, but here's a clip...
