DAN PENN - THE FAME RECORDINGS (Ace CD, 2012)

Yet more amazing gear excavated from the FAME studios tape vault! Southern soul fans will be familiar with Dan Penn as the writer of classic after classic, Do Right Woman Do Right Man, Dark End Of The Street, I'm Your Puppet, Don't Lose Your Good Thing, and mo mo mo...

What we have here is a whole bunch of his original unreleased demos he cut to pitch to singers. But these aren't just him plinking on his guitar and mumbling the lyrics into a tape deck, these are basically finished productions, with the full Fame band behind him. And fuck, what a great voice he had! Real nice and grainy. He did release a couple records as an artist too, but he didn't like being on stage and preferred to stay in the studio and keep knocking 'em out.

This really is a spectacular and revelatory release. All but one cut on it is previously unreleased, and the consistency of great songwriting and playing and singing makes it a pleasure all the way through. Great liner notes as well, with comments from Dan and Rick Hall and spooner and other participants on each of the sessions. I know nobody buys CD's any more, but you should buy this one!

ON THE RADIO

Got the nuggets triple pack in my locker this week, re-issue of the original nuggets comp, newly put together downunder nuggets comp of 60s autralian stuff, and newly recorded nuggets tribute cd with all current aussie groups doing songs off the original nuggets (some bloody good versions too). So a bit of stuff off all those, and some stuff off the new dan penn fame demos cd, plus stuff from teeth and tongue and fatti frances and super wild horses and elvis angels who all have gigs this weekend, as well as a bunch of great old 45's i've gotten in the mail in the last couple weeks, including this killer moody thing called "beatle meets a ladybug" that is way better than the name makes it sound... Possibly a live in studio song or two from Palm Springs as well!

SCOTT WALKER SINGS JACQUES BREL

I listened to this LP this morning and once again had that feeling like it's the greatest record of all time. What a combination, the jaw-droppingly intense lusty heart pumping songs of Jacques Brel, superbly adapted into English by Mort Shuman and sung like a golden god by Scott Walker, over these classic british 60s orchestral arrangements. It's enough to make your head explode...

Scott recorded a bunch of Brel songs on each of his first 3 albums and this record combines them all together. Not sure if it's still in print, but you can get a second hand LP for 20 or 30 bucks, or DL it HERE, and I believe they have it on Cd at the Melbourne City Library...
