HARMONY

+

=

My buddy Tom Lyngcoln has a new band with his wife playing drums and Amanda Ukeladie and two other birds singing harmony and some bloke playing bass. It sounds kinda like his other band The Nation Blue stuffed full of all those cruddy Lee Moses records he's been listening to. I'm excited! Check out the first recording here.

They play their debut gig this Thursday the 16th at The Tote with Spinning Rooms, New War and Lower Plenty. Harmony play at 9pm...

On The Radio, In The World... 10/12/10

Christmaaaaaaaaaas! I have been Christmasing it up like a mother lover, getting drunk and feeded on other peoples tab seemingly every night of the week. What a season. Somewhere in between i've managed to compile my 11th annual Christmas CD, with all my fave records I've dug up this year (or as many as i could fit on a cd.) I'll be spinning them songs plus a few more that had to be cut on the radio this Friday, and anybody who takes out a membership to Stone Love can go on my Christmas List and i'll post them a copy for Christmas. ho ho ho...

I'll be filling in for Miss Goldie on Boss Action this sunday from 1 till 3pm too, so tune in then for lots of hangover easing soul ballads...

DION & THE BELMONTS

Dion Dimucci. Truly an Italian American icon. It's a shame they dressed him up in those college boy sweaters and didn't write him some songs about being a knife weilding teenage junkie street punk that he could actually relate to, but at least he got to be be an immortal bad ass on The Wanderer and the awesome kazoo powered "Little Diane"....

Thanks to tom Lyngcoln for hipping me to that one...

And dig him here in classic 'live' action. He's trying to get it moving but with the suit and the crowd they've stuck him with, i don't like his chances. Some of them are actually glaring at him!

And Rhonda noticed his uncanny resemblance to a young David Bowie! They got all the same face moves...

LONELY AVENUE - THE UNLIKELY LIFE AND TIMES OF DOC POMUS

This really is a beautiful book. Very affecting. The loneliness and the dreaming and the wry smiles and the whole great life force of Doc Pomus sink right into you. As a quick primer for those who don't know who he is, at various times Doc was the only crippled, jewish blues singer in america, hack writer of million selling selling teen pop records (including some timeless classics like 'save the last dance for me' and 'lonely avenue'), professorial gambler and mafia card game organizer, among other things. His life in music criss crossed with so many significant artists i could not possibly list them here, but I greatly enjoyed seeing them pop up from page to page, Big Maybelle to Rodney Dangerfield.

A lot of research has obviously gone into this book, but it's written in the style of novel for full dramatic and emotional effect. Just have a read of the of the introduction...

It's something, huh?

Here's some great descriptive parts from when he's living 'the life'...

And I love how it's always talking about the food they're eating at 5 in the morning. Makes me hongry...

And the loneliness...

And heres another bit I love describing the lobby of The Forest Hotel, where he lives while doing his well paid hackwork for hill and range...

Just read the dang book, okay?

On The Radio, In The World … 26/11/10

I am home! Never felt so good. Warm, but not sweaty. Records and dog to touch. Simpsons at my fingertips. Happy... Plus I came home to a package containing a copy of one of my all time favourite crappy records, "He Makes Me So Mad" by The Hollywood Jills, on the very budget sounding Tune-Kel Records. It's so crappy, I can't believe it got distributed nationally on Capitol Records. And that Northern Soul geeks pay hundreds of dollars for it. It's awesome though. makes me smile a great deal. So i'll play that. And some other stuff too...

Oh yeah, Mohair and Emma Peel have a new mod record hop in the dungeon below the Grace Darling starting this Saturday (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=173798575965429). Goes till 1am, then I'm on round the corner at yah yahs till 5am! Then the YahYahs record fair the next arvo at midday. Oh dear...

SONGS THE SIMPSONS TAUGHT US

Since arriving home from five weeks travelling yeasterday, i have had to have a serious ingestion of The Simpsons to restore my brain to it's proper equilibrium. I couple of songs popped up that I realized I love from their Simpsons cameo but have no idea what they are...

Excuse my ignorance, but are Journey always this awesome?

Always gets me a little teary as Homer searches for his soulmate via montage...

I think I first heard this on The Simpsons too...

Here's Rhonda's special mention from Futurama, Connie Francis' "I Will Wait For You"...

Any other favourite songs you first heard on The Simpsons?
