How Ghetto is this record cover?
Was grinning from ear to ear when I found this at The Searchers yesterday. There's this whole wonderful culture of mexican gang members in LA being obsessed with this kind of smoochy seventies vocal group soul. There must be a million dodgy looking bootleg compilations with names like "Lowrider Gangsta Oldies Vol 11", but if the notes on the back are to be believed, this is the first! It's certainly the most lovably ghetto looking one i've come across, from the pic of the 'gang' to the crappy drippy letters to the tape holding it together to the earnest spiel on the back about 'the essence of the way of life of the Low Rider'. I lurve it...
PS Note the appearance of last weeks post, "I'm Just An Average Guy" by The Masqueraders on Volume 5! You can't get more smoochy lowrider than that...

How much did U pay for it?...
ReplyDeleteTen bucks or so. I saw a guy selling the whole set for $300 or something on ebay a while back but i figure it's more fun to come across 'em one at a time..
