On The Radio, In The World … 29/7/10

ON THE RADIO
DJ Jim Dandy’s Dumpster Delights! Part 2! Once again I have swooped by the dumpster out back of Jim Dandy’s house when my spidey senses started tingling and telling mere there was fresh meat inside, and boy howdy I found some gems. They may be a little busted up, but they sound goooood. That’ll probably take up the first hour or so, and then, well, I’ll just keep on playing all the new records I’ve scavenged from other places. I got this great old bootleg LP called East Side Story Vol 1 of all those seventies vocal group sounds that Mexican Gang members in LA love, with a fab picture of just such a gang and great amauterish drippy lettering on the front. You gotta see this thing, its just so Ghetto…

How Ghetto is this record cover?

Was grinning from ear to ear when I found this at The Searchers yesterday. There's this whole wonderful culture of mexican gang members in LA being obsessed with this kind of smoochy seventies vocal group soul. There must be a million dodgy looking bootleg compilations with names like "Lowrider Gangsta Oldies Vol 11", but if the notes on the back are to be believed, this is the first! It's certainly the most lovably ghetto looking one i've come across, from the pic of the 'gang' to the crappy drippy letters to the tape holding it together to the earnest spiel on the back about 'the essence of the way of life of the Low Rider'. I lurve it...

PS Note the appearance of last weeks post, "I'm Just An Average Guy" by The Masqueraders on Volume 5! You can't get more smoochy lowrider than that...

McHouston "Mickey" 'Guitar' Baker

My old lady is house sitting for my buddy Rodrigo and I have had a great old time sitting here in his loungeroom in my underwear, warming by the electric fireplace and digging through his spectacular library of compact discs. Rodrigo is hilariously ignorant of white music, but he has a wall of blues, jazz, ska and whatnot so jam-packed and extensive it is almost obscene at points. He has, for instance, not one but FIVE different 4 disc Fats Waller box sets. “Fifteen discs of Fats Waller enough? Are you mad? Get out of my house!”

My favourite find so far has been this disc of Mickey Baker’s records from the early 50’s. I knew his rep as basically the number one r’n’b session guitarist in New York, playing all those tasty licks on records by Little Willie John and Big Maybelle and The Coasters and everybody else, and his records with Sylvia Robinson as Mickey and Sylvia (most of which I never liked much, save for No Good Lover), but I had no idea he’d cut all these cool sides under his own name. Of course, looking at the notes, a lot of the coolest ones never even got released and sat in the can for 50 years until this CD came out, so thank God it did. Real nice succinct but flavorful telling of his story too, check it out…

I love his guitar tone, real clean but so valvey and rich. Here he is cutting up on a thing called “Guitar Mambo” (though even he gets cut by Ram Ramirez on the funky organ), here’s one of the boss unreleased numbers on the CD called “Down To The Bottom” and here he is ripping on Big Maybelle’s “Ocean of Tears”, which also criminally sat in the can for 40 years (you can find it on The Complete Okeh Sessions). And here he is today!

Dig this article about the photographer Jim Herrington meeting up with Mickey in France (it also has some more detailed background on him), and cop the aforementioned anthology here. There’s also another CD done by Rev-O-La last year that combines a bunch of the solo stuff with other hot records he played on as a session man called "Mickey Baker In the '50s: Hit, Git & Split”. Looks tasty…

PS I find it amusing that he was at first McHouston "Mickey" Baker and then Mickey moved up to official status and he was then Mickey "Guitar" Baker...

"I Can't Stop Crying" - Sam Hutchins / The Masqueraders

Sam Hutchins - I Cant Stop Crying

The Masqueraders - I'm Just An Average Guy

I'm a huge fan of the soul group The Masqueraders, and I was very happy recently to come across what is kind of a lost, sideways piece of their canon I had never heard before. A journeyman vocal group from Texas, The Masqueraders tried and failed to make it in Detroit during the mid sixties (though they cut some wonderfully atmospheric lo-fi jams for Lou Beatty's LaBeat label), but really hit their stride artistically when they wound up at Chips Moman's American Recording Studio (home to recent hits like The Box Tops "The Letter", Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds" and Joe Tex's "Show Me") in 1968, cutting a string of aching but oh so rich and creamy soul ballads with the dynamite American Group house band backing them up.

What really sets the 'Raders apart from many of their contemporaries, besides the ripping lead vocals of Lee Jones, is that they wrote almost all their own material. Somewhere along the way they picked up a buddy from Texas named Sam Hutchins, who became almost the sixth Masquerader, opening their shows and filling in when members drifted out of the group for a while. Chips signed him up too and he cut three singles which the ‘Raders wrote and backed him up on; including today’s number, “I Can’t Stop Crying”. That falling over hi-hat thing that Gene Chrisman goes into about half way through just slays me!

After 40+ years with only fleeting hints of success, The Masqueraders are still performing on Beale St in Memphis today (repping for Texas in big cowboy hats), sometimes joined by their old buddy Sam Hutchins.

You can read an excellent
interview with them here, and you can buy the excellent
The Masqueraders: Unmasked anthology heree. It’ll make you feel real warm and creamy…

THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES!

I went to the library intent on getting something stupid to watch, and boy did I succeed with The Abominable Dr Phibes! Starring Vincent Price (in his big 100th film!) as the fabulous Phibes, a becaped, pipe organ playing superghoul who's never too busying with his crazed murdering to enyoy a waltz with his undead bride or a nice dry martini, poured down the hole in his neck from whence his croaky proclomations of doom doth utter!

The deal is, a team of nine eminent surgeons and one perky nurse fail to save a concert organists beautiful young wife, and he prompty drives his car off a cliff in a frenzy of greif. Some years later, they come back from the dead to inflict a fabulous revenge on their wrongdoers, with each mind boggling murder inspired by one of the ten plagues visited on the Pharoahs in the bible. It's frogs, locusts and rats a go go, baby!

The production design is all done in wonderfully colourful, London '69 style, and the pacing is bracingly brisk! Unlike most B movies, which dole out the action sparingly between oodles of yawnsome line reading, this is basically one fiendishly ingenious supermurder after another, with occasional interjections from big-nosed cockney policemen saying 'he's a queer one that Dr. Phibes, inni?', and nice scenes of Phibes and his wife lamping in their ghost mansion, romacing to the sound of his life size tin wind-up big band. Price has some wonderful latex outfits and his glowing red pipe organ is a thing to behold, as is his fabulous hair and trademark ham.

I squealed with delight the whole way, and I wait with baited breath for evening when Dr Phibes Rises Again!
