CHARLIE RICH ON HI RECORDS

I love Charlie Rich. He's a Charmer.

His time at Hi Records in the mid sixties was brief and not particularly significant for either party, but i've always found the records they made rather charming.

Charlie probably cut his goldiest bricks at Sun in the late 50's but his best stuff always had more of a roly poly barrelhouse piano storytelling vibe than the standard psychotic knife-weilding energy of his label mates. He'd finally hit on some big silver haired Nashville country mega stardom recording for Epic in the seventies, but for the most part that stuff sounds pretty staid.

Hi was still searching for an identity, presently halfway between the hokey instrumentals they'd started with and the soupy smooth memphis soul they'd hit with in the early 70's, desperately searching for a star vocalist. Charlie wasn't it, the records didn't do shit, and within a year he had his walking papers, but I kinda wish they'd stuck with it a few more years. The records aren't really classics, but there was some real potential in the sound they were getting. Charlie always wanted be a jazz pianist (and spent the late forties working supper clubs in Mel torme mode), he had a great country crooners voice, and he always had a natural feel for for r'n'b, and I guess that all comes together nicely on the Hi Stuff. He did a whole album of Hank Williams songs which is a bit patchy, but I love his dreamy rendition of Wedding Bells. Pass On By is classic memphis country soul coming from the country side, and Can't Get Right has that nice mid period Hi strutting organ funk I could listen to all day.

All Charlies Hi stuff was collected on a CD in 2000 that's still pretty easy to find, so if you dig these, git out there and cop you some silver haired country soul...

On The Radio, In The World... 23/9/10

ON THE RADIO

Ooooooh, got this great deep soul thing by Ray Lewis called "I Still Love You" (the sequel to "getting over you", He was wrong!) that I've been after forever. Man it's good. Got that Johnny Brantley stamp of weird intensity all over it. Also some early Chris Farlowe and The Thunderbirds (he was neck and neck with Tom Jones as the ballsiest singer in the early brit r'n'b scene, but instead of becoming an international pop star he became britains leading collector of Nazi war memorabilia...), plus more from Motorhead, The Pretty Things, Brownie Mcgee, Louis Jordan, plus other stuff too...

TOM JONES / CHRIS FARLOWE

I. JUST. CAN'T. STOP. WATCHING. THIS.

Tom Jones Circa 1964. The crowd, the singing, the rockin combo behind him, the part where he points at the camera, but most especially, The crotch thrusts...

Around the same time, a young man named Chris Farlowe was neck and neck with Tom for the title of ballsiest, brassiest singer in the London R'n'B scene. He made some great records, and had a no 1 hit with the jagger/richard produced "out of time", but while Tom went on to become an international pop star and underwear collector, Chris went on to become Britain's foremost collector of Nazi war memorabilia. Make of that what you will...

It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.”

Geneive Waite - Romance is On The Rise (1973)

I love this record. I love the lyrics. I love the way Genieve squeals in that weird childlike breathy marilyn monroe voice and gets totally wild and off key on things like White Cadillac but it's just magic all the way. I love the Fleetmood Mac / Broadway type arrangements that are totally west coast session muso slick but completely tasteful and idisynchratic at the same time. I just love it all!

John Phillips (he formerly of the mama's and the papas) wrote some of the material for an aborted broadway show, but ended up folding it into this record he produced for his third wife, actress Genevieve Waite. It was a critical success but a commercial stiff and quickly dissappeared. Phillips blamed poor distribution, but it managed to get itself distributed in Australia by Festival, where my mate Teo's mother Jan came upon it (I think Henry from the black cat put her onto it when it came out) and proceeded to annoy him by playing it every day of his childhood. When I started doing the radio show she kept saying I should hear this genevieve waite record (to which Teo strongly objected), and several years later she finally managed to play it to me. Thanks, Jan. It a real treasure.

The whole record is great, but heres a couple of faves to get you hot on the trail...

Danny

White Cadillac

Trashy Rumours

It was reissued on Cd a few years ago but now seems to be out of print again. You don't see the LP too often and people usually want a fair bit of money for it, but I found a copy just yesterday for $15, so don't give up hope!

THE TWILIGHT ZONE (1959)

Been watching the original series of The Twilight Zone for the first time. Amazing! The quality of script and direction in each episode is just sterling, comparable to great films of the time, and the voice overs by series creator Rod Serling are just to die for! And then at the end of each episode you actually get to see the voice! He's got some kind of weird lip thing and seeing him talk and that voice coming out of him just makes me quiver with delight...

Here's a classic episode in three parts (with a nice Serling outro at the end of part 3...)

On The Radio, In The World … 2/9/10

ON THE RADIO

A couple of special treats this week! Got a couple of unbeleiveably great uncensored Elvis recordings where he and the band get loose as hell and he lets rips with the expletives like Al Sweringen from Deadwood, as well a recording I found on the The Hound Blog of a pirate radio show done by a GI in Vietnam named Dave Rabbit circa 1970. "We bring the truth to the first termers here in the republic of Vietnam. We also bring you Hard Acid Rock Music, the up to date music of todays american youth..." The music, from the likes of Sugarloaf, Bloodrock and Three Dog Night, is pretty painful, but Dave Rabbit's announcing is just hilarious, so I've edited it so that each 12 minute acid rock masterpiece only goes 20 seconds or so...

Aside from that, got some great r'n'b from Joe Lutcher and Wynonie Harris, a bunch of things form Sam Cookes SAR records label, some 80's australian stuff from The Primitive calculators, the Particles and Asyluum, and some other stuff too...

"Vinyl", A documentary by Alan Zweig

Thanks to Simon Grounds for putting me onto this great homemade documentary about record collecting. Director Alan Zweig, who sees his own collecting obsession as a mental affliction that has basically sabotaged his life, interviews other obsessos in their houses and casually slips in questions like, "So, do you ever think, maybe I collect all these records because I hate myself and need to fill the void of my meaningless life?"
The collectors he interviews are a mixed bunch, some definietly more likeable or amusing than others, but this guy here is by far my favourite...

Zweigs endless maudlin monologues about wishing he had a daughter and obsessively collecting easy listening records he doesn't even like get a little trying, but many of them are very funny too, and it's all part of the sense of mental unhealthiness that's at the heart of the film.

As a record collector, it certainly made me assess my own habits and motivations, and as a documentary I found it utterly compelling! Well worth a look...

SOUL A GO GO SEPTEMBER!
