MOTHER OF ROCK: LILLIAN ROXON (Paul Clark, 2010)

Watched this real nice tribute to the life of Lillian Roxon, an Australian journalist and general wild broad who moved to new york in the early 60s and was all up in that Max's Kansas City scene till her untimely death in 1973. It gives you a real thorough feeling for her as a person and it's a nice evocation of the times, but it's kind of a weird unsettling feeling having this person you never really knew anything about's whole life laid out in front of you and then they just die. Or maybe I was just toasted and thinking about it too much. Thoroughly enjoyed anyway! Great quotes galore...

ONCE UPON A TIME IN ANATOLIA (Nuri Bilge Ceylan, 2011)

Having to sit through the previews of idiotic Chinese romance pictures and corny American indie things only made watching this piece of stellar film-making all the sweeter. So good to have a new film I can get behind all the way, seems like it's been a long time. There's a noticeable absence of bullshit here. It's a film about a murder, but there's no action to speak of. It's about a convoy of men in the mountains of turkey searching for a body.  It's shot beautifully, the characters are all interesting and believable and nuanced, and the way the night slowly turns to cold daylight to the next sleepless afternoon is executed so well you really feel as if you've been up all night with these men. It's quite long and takes something of an emotional toll on you (it did on me anyway), but i can't recommend enough taking the time to see this at the cinema. As Herb Morrison said, "OH, THE HUMANITY!"

Paul Wibier - "Satan" (Born Mean), 1969

For a little while I was having a hard time being interested in anything other than this song...

It's from a biker movie I have yet to see called "Satan's Sadists". A mystery man going by the name "Harley Hatcher" composed and arranged the soundtrack, and though it's quite a cult item, to me most of it's fairly forgettable. Thankfully the best song on it slipped out as a promo 45 at some point, and slipped into my hands recently. The organy 70's arrangement and the croony singing is pretty great, but really it's all about the lyrics.
