THAT NEW BATMAN MOVIE (the aussie guy, lately)

Whatever happened to studio execs brow beating directors into not making popcorn movies 3 hours long? For 40 minutes or so I was having a good old time watching planes getting ripped apart and batman talking all gravelly and flying around in his bat-wing and so forth. But 2 hours later after all this dumb beefy villian with an old scottish mans voice raised in hell october revolution secret society and oh it was me! i am the child of liam neeson who you vaguely remember having some stupid part in the last movie shit, I just wanted it to hurry up and be over. I certainly DIDN'T CARE what was going to happen.

I did enjoying eating the popcorn and drinking the brandy coke and making a mess though, that was pretty good...

BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD (Benh Zeitlin, 2012)

I tells ya, i almost could have really liked this movie. The subject matter is very unusual (it's a semi fantastical thing starring a six year old girl set in a remote outcast community in New Orleans on the wrong side of a levy and faced with imminent flooding / government intervention) and the script is great (including the ripper line "...nobody likes a pity-party havin' ass woman..."
The problem is the way its shot and PARTICULARLY the piano and strings 'emotive' score is sooo bog-standard Sundance indie film that it makes the thing seem positively ordinary. Anybody seen it? Agree? Disagree? I really would have thought with such an unusual film they would have done something more interesting with the music.

This was adapted from a one act play, and even though I generally hate seeing plays, I wish i could have seen this one to compare...

MOONRISE KINGDOM (Wes Anderson, 2012)

It would be very easy to look at this and say "geez, all this cutesy faux vintage crap that cunts love these days...". We'll call me a 'cunt these days', cause I just lurved it!

This guys movies are all kind of unashamedly the same, and that last one with the three handsome dudes on the train in India pushed it a bit too far for me (I seem to remember some slow mo shot of the cool guy walking through the Indian village to a Rolling Stones song making me vomit), but like that third bear's porridge this one gets it juuuuuuust riiiiiiiiiiight. It's funny and it's romantic and the actors and the characters are all great (dagnabit I actually cared about them!), and I just can't help but go ooooooh at that sumptuous story book production design and nice long camera pans. They look niiiiiiiiiiice.

To get off this list, reply saying: Russian president Vladimir Putin, who went hang-gliding in a white jumpsuit to train Siberian cranes bred in captivity to migrate south, condemned a notorious protest orgy but reflected on its perks. “Some fans of group sex say that’s it better than one-on-one,” Putin said, “because, as with any collective work, you can skive off.”

THE LAST HOLIDAY: A MEMOIR (Gil Scott Heron, 2012)

When I first started reading this, i was telling everybody how great it was, but now i've finished it, i'm not so sure. Ostensibly it's supposed to be about his time supporting Stevie Wonder on his Hotter Than July tour in the early 80's when Stevie was campaigning to get Martin Luther King's birthday made into a public holiday, but's more than 3/4 of the way through before you get to this point, the rest of the book serving as kind of personal memoir up to this point, focusing particularly on certain key points in his career. It starts of really well, with fine, moving descriptions of his childhood in Jackson and his grandmother that raised him. But then as he gets older, he just seems to kind of breeze through things and it all ends up feeling a bit lightweight. Some cute little anecdotes about the roadies or whatever, but nothing much. And then in the last couple of pages he gets all deep and personally revelatory again, but i couldn't help but feel kind of disappointed by the whole thing. Some good bits though! lemme know if anybody wanna borrow it...
