FASTER, PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL! (Russ Meyer, 1965)

Every time I watch this film I am simply staggered by how good it is. In my mind perhaps it gets relegated into the "fun exploito camp movie" bag, but it's so far beyond that it's staggering. John Waters' quote that it is "beyond a doubt, the best movie ever made... possibly better than any film that will be made in the future" is not far off the mark.

What can you say? From the first second with that weird black and white patterned screen and the dripping voice over it looks and sounds amazing. And then it blasts straight into the amazing theme song and that great shot of the dancers from below and the pent up men... it's just breathtaking. And it never stops being great for a second. Of course Tura Satana as Varla is completely iconic and desirable and terrifying and just beyond cool, but EVRYBODY in it, right down to the gas station attendant, is totally memorable and maxed out and just dripping with character. And the script is superb, one classic line after another. God the way Varla spits out her lines is really something. But everybody gets great lines. And the way the whole plot develops and the two sides square off against each other had me completely enthralled. It is truly the prototype of what I want out of a movie.

If you've never seen it, you sure have something to look forward to. You can watch the whole thing on youtube, but it's such a great looking movie I think you owe it to yourself to get it on a DVD or at least get a good quality download.

600 stars.
