MARCH 13TH - COMMIT TO COMMUNITY RADIO PBS OPEN DAY

Radio is slowly but surely going all digital, and the government has just pulled the funding for the community stations to get fully onto the digital system by the time analogue is phased out, so read this shizz below, sign the petition, and come along to PBS next wednesday to be outraged and eat a sausage. I'll be co-presenting City Slang with Kim!

As you may have heard recently, PBS will be participating in a national campaign to make sure that the federal government fulfills its commitment to community radio in Australia.  Previously the government has promised to fund the community sector nationally to help provide the infrastructure required to broadcast on the new digital radio platform.  PBS and all major metro stations (3RRR, 3CR, 3MBS, et al) already broadcast on digital radio and without full funding those services may have to be shut down.  There have already been over a million digital radios sold in Australia and the uptake of digital radio is growing steadily.

On Wednesday March 13 EVERY community station will participate in a national day of programming to encourage listeners to support community radio and our fight to get the government to provide the funding they have previously promised.  In the last budget that funding was cut by $1.4M.

Here at PBS we’ll open our doors and invite the community in for a BBQ during the day.

PROBE IS TURNING ON THE PEOPLE

Bruce Milne put me onto his buddy Phil's website "THE PROBE". What it lacks in up to date design it definitely makes up for in super music obsesso zeal and weirdness! Enough to make the worst of us feel like perfectly upright, healthy citizens.

He puts together themed "sessions", mixes of songs about cockroaches and giants, contemporary covers of the velvet underground, songs featuring deep voiced vocal interjections, and so forth. For one he found the original sound effects record used for the car crash on Nervous Norvus' "Transfusion", then made a mix of every other record that used that same car crash.

Hours of fun for the whole family!

EARTH GIRLS ARE EASY (Julien Temple, 1988)

How this movie escaped my grasp as a child i cannot understand. I saw it in the video store, i saw the preview on other videos, yet like ships in the night...

Anyway, I finally watched it last friday night, and I can tell you it's without doubt one of the great crap movies of the 1980's. I'd put it right up there with The Adventures Of Ford Fairlane and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun for pure trashy pop culture enjoymotainment. I would have loved it then, and I lurve it now.

The plot basically has nail salon gal Geena Davis having some hairy aliens crash land in her pool and then to hide their alienness from her slimy doctor boyfriend she shaves them and they turn out to be total babes and they go wild on the town in LA and romance and trouble and dance-offs ensue.

Director Julien Temple (he made The Great Rock N Roll Swindle) mainly had a background in music videos and this is basically a wacky late 80's LA pop music / culture movie, with lots of song and dance sequences and plenty of colour colour colour.

Lets get a whole bunch of popcorn and and some champagne and paint our toenails and watch it together!
